独自動車大手ダイムラー のディーター・ツェッチェ社長は11日、米デトロイトモーターショーで記者団に対し、スマートの次世代モデルの提携先を遅くとも2010年6月末までには決める意向を示した。仏ルノーも含め複数の候補と協議していると述べたほか、提携を通して現在2人乗りだけとなっているモデル構成を多様化する方針を明らかにした。メディア報道では、ルノーとの技術提携が有力視されており、4ドアの新モデルにはルノー「トゥインゴ」のプラットフォームが採用されるとの憶測も出ている。
